Crackle and Tile

You guys. It takes a long time for me to make a kiln’s worth of Tak tiles. I mean a looooooong time. I’m not a production potter who works out mass tile making techniques but a thrower and hand builder who rolls out slabs and cuts out each piece individually. And while this feeds my creative soul, it means that the thought of selling these as sets becomes almost hilarious!

The first batch of tiles I made were for myself and a friend. There was a lot of experimentation and playing around but they turned out pretty great. They were imperfect and wonky and we loved them. Then I started talking with Patrick Rothfuss about the Capstones being a part of his next fundraiser and it just came to me… I had to send him a set of tiles! And, as I can make as many as I want, I could send him my set and make more later. Well, once my best friend got wind of this plan, she wanted to use her newfound leather working skills to make a box to hold them. She’s incredibly talented so I said “OF COURSE!” and the whole set ended up looking like this:

Pretty cool, huh? Long story short, we sent the set, felt very proud of ourselves and got on with our lives until I realized I can’t freaken play Tak without tiles! I shook my head, got to work and we cut to the kiln I got to unload this week filled with the tiles I’ve been able to make when not madly shaping Capstones.

New Tak Pieces Out of the Kilns

OK, got a big batch of pieces out of the kilns this week. Some really fun variations we spent a few months working out. First, here are the four shapes they’ll all come in:

They all fit and balance really well on top of the tiles and my favorite is totally the short disc. So much can be done with it and it feels so good in your hand. Or maybe my favorite is the first one… or maybe…. *sigh* I love them all.

Now, there are so many glaze possibilities but that was also narrowed down a bit from the initial spaghetti-againt-the-wall ideas. Here are the glazes from this first batch of finished pieces:

I’m so excited that I was able to get some pieces into the studio’s Reduction kiln! We can only fire this one up a few times a year so it was great luck in timing and resulted in the gorgeous orange and white stone-like pieces you see here.

Tak Capstones for Worldbuilders

Been taking a break from clay this spring

I’m still here! Just been taking a bit of a break from cranking out a ton of new clay stuff this spring. For my day job, I’m working in the vast, spectacular beer and wine world of Oregon and, for the first time in a while, I enjoy my work life and am giving it all of my energy.

Some New Reduction Fire Pieces

I loved the Shino shells that came out of the last reduction kiln so much that when there was a tiny bit of room in the next one, I jumped on it. My favorite mug from it and a really fun experiment…

Reduction Fire

This last weekend, I had the pleasure of being a part of a reduction kiln firing at the studio. If you’re unfamiliar with what that is, it’s when the kiln uses fire, (as opposed to the heated coils of an electric kiln,) and you manipulate the atmosphere inside so that the fire burns the oxygen out and is forced to pull it out of the glazes. This creates all KINDS of wonderful effects, depending on the chemical makeup of the glaze.

Radius has a few electric kilns but a couple of years ago, they built one big gas kiln just for this purpose. 

It’s big and not automated at all so firing it takes a lot of ware and a full day of checking and adjusting to make the magic happen. And magic it is! I posted the following picture on Instagram of the bowls I had going into it:

At the last minute, I also decided to glaze a couple of shells in one of the Shino glazes we have, and that one of the other artists, Mike Sexton, gets really beautiful results from.

Took a few hours to load it all in and then we set it to slowly warm up overnight.

The next morning, we started the process of slowly heating it up and then checking and adjusting on the half hour for the entire day. Once we hit cone 6 and the final reduction phase, the firing was complete and she was left to cool for two days.

Things were still pretty warm when we started unbricking the door and unloading.

New Favorite

Anyone who’s creative and likes to make things will recognize the parental understanding that you always have a favorite but you don’t always want to say so. You still love your others! Just…. not quiiiiiiite as much as you love the favorite.

It’s all about that gorgeous celadon but it’s also because she was fired in the gas reduction kiln at the studio. I absolutely have a preference for the interesting colors that come about because of the oxygen reduction that happens in gas/wood/salt/etc kilns but have had bad luck with our studio’s gas firings…. until now.
