Crackle and Tile

You guys. It takes a long time for me to make a kiln’s worth of Tak tiles. I mean a looooooong time. I’m not a production potter who works out mass tile making techniques but a thrower and hand builder who rolls out slabs and cuts out each piece individually. And while this feeds my creative soul, it means that the thought of selling these as sets becomes almost hilarious!

The first batch of tiles I made were for myself and a friend. There was a lot of experimentation and playing around but they turned out pretty great. They were imperfect and wonky and we loved them. Then I started talking with Patrick Rothfuss about the Capstones being a part of his next fundraiser and it just came to me… I had to send him a set of tiles! And, as I can make as many as I want, I could send him my set and make more later. Well, once my best friend got wind of this plan, she wanted to use her newfound leather working skills to make a box to hold them. She’s incredibly talented so I said “OF COURSE!” and the whole set ended up looking like this:

Pretty cool, huh? Long story short, we sent the set, felt very proud of ourselves and got on with our lives until I realized I can’t freaken play Tak without tiles! I shook my head, got to work and we cut to the kiln I got to unload this week filled with the tiles I’ve been able to make when not madly shaping Capstones.

But the crackle glaze ones are the best. You look down into the kiln and they look like they’re just clear but as soon as you pull them out, the glaze begins to crack and can continue doing so for a while. There have been a few pieces that I thought would be a lost cause but I just let them sit for a week or two and they come to life. Luckily, most of this batch crackled right away and I was able to ink them and send them off to Worldbuilders.
